Random fact...
Some months ago I was reading the label on a Sam Adams Boston Lager and noticed that in small printed it says Lager (Ale in TX). I was baffled as to how the state of Texas could consider a lager to be ale...
Today I found out why: In Texas a malt beverage between 1.5 and 4% ABV (Alcohol by volume) is called "beer" and a malt beverage over 4% ABV is called "ale".
Of course, this is extremely misleading, as ale is a subcategory of beer and is not distinguished from the other major subcategory of beer (lager) by alcohol content, but rather by the yeast used (ale is made with top-fermenting yeast and lager with bottom-fermenting yeast).
Get it together, Texas.
