Pairing Concept: Kriek & Turkey

I'd like to put out an idea I came up with that I liked. I haven't really gotten into the bitter cluster of flavors until the past couple of years when I approached 21 and my brother introduced me to ale and Sam Adams Boston Lager. My entire life I've loved sour foods like citrus and pickles. With that in mind, my first pairing idea is:

Thanksgiving/Christmas Turkey and Kriek Lambic

I tried this months ago with Cajun seasoned turkey and Lindeman's Kriek Lambic and really enjoyed it. Lambic is Beligian beer that is fermented with wild yeast suspended in the air of the Senne river valley in Belgium, and Kriek Lambic is Lambic to which cherries have been added, spurning a second fermentation. This results in a sour, slightly cherry-tinged beer has an extremely unique flavor compared to most beers I've ever had. The sour and slightly fruit-flavored beer kind of works as an alcoholic substitute for your cranberry sauce side.

I really enjoyed the Lindeman's Kriek; I've got Cantillon Kriek waiting for me in a fridge back in Charleston that I can't wait to get home and try. I'll give a report and review on my beer escapades in my next visit home.

  1. I definitely liked the thought of how the beer acted like the cranberry sauce.
